General Accommodation (effective) | Motel (deprecated 1999-08-09) | Originally, the Public Health Act subdivided lodging businesses into Hotels(A), Hotels(B), Timeshares, Motels(A), Motels(B), Farm Motels, and Inns. However, all of them were combined to 'Lodging Business' upon replacement of the Public Health Act with the Public Health Control Act on 1999-09-09. Furthermore, upon enactment of 'Residence Accommodation' on 2012-01-10, Motels(A), Motels(B), Farm Motels, and Inns were combined to 'General Accommodation', while Hotels and Timeshares were categorized as 'Tourist Accommodation', pursuant to the Tourism Promotion Act. | A. Residence Accommodation (enacted 2012-01-10) | A lodging property equipped with facilities of accommodation and cooking, for the use of tourists, so that they can stay for the extended period of time. Enforcement Decree of Public Health Control Act, Article 4 2 | ① It shall conform to the standards for residence accommodation prescribed in Appendix 1 of the Enforcement Rule of the Public Health Management Act. i) The residence accommodation shall be equipped with equipment for cooking and ventilation such as windows. In such cases, if the cooking equipment is installed indoors, it must be fixed in each room or in a shared cooking space. ii) The residence accommodation shall have a bathroom or shower booth in each room. Provided that the hostel under Article 2 Paragraph 1 2E of the Enforcement Decree of the Tourism Promotion Act may be equipped with shared bathrooms or shower booths. iii) The general and residence accommodations using a part of a building shall have dedicated guestroom floors, at least 30 rooms or more, or occupy at least a third of the gross floor area of the building. Campsite | A site providing space for installing camping equipments, for the use of camping tourists. Enforcement Decree of Tourism Promotion Act, Article 2 Paragraph 1 3C | ① It will be located in a safe place without risk of flooding, loss, isolation, landslides, or rockfall. ② Placement of facilities, how to use them, and instructions for action in case of an emergency shall be posted in a place where users can find easily. ③ Facilities or equipment to notify the user of an emergency shall be equipped. ④ Secure fire extinguishers appropriately and place them in an easy-to-see place, considering the size of the campsite. ⑤ Secure shelters and evacuation routes inside or outside the campsite in case of an emergency. ⑥ Personnel knowing how to take actions in case of an emergency shall be present during the opening of the campsite. ⑦ Campground facilities shall be installed with minimizing changes in the shape and quality of the land, so that the original form of the natural ecosystem can be preserved as much as possible. In this case, the types of campsite facilities that can be installed in the campsite shall be prescribed by the Tourism Promotion Enforcement Regulation. ⑧ The total floor area of buildings installed in a campsite (referring to a building pursuant to Article 2 1B of the Building Act) shall be less than 10% of the total area of the campsite. However, school buildings under Article 2 of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, which are closed and not in operation, are exempt. ⑨ Nevertheless, if a campsite is installed in a conservation management district under Article 36 1B of the National Land Planning and Utilization Act, or in a conservation green-belt district under Article 30 4D of the Enforcement Decree of National Land Planning and Utilization Act, all of the following requirements shall be satisfied. However, if the campsite uses a closed school property (only if there is no increase in the site area of existing closed school property, no new or extension of the road to the entrance of the campsite i) and ii) below shall not apply: i) The total area of the campsite is less than 10,000 square meters. ii) The total floor area of the buildings installed in the campsite will be less than 300 square meters, and less than 10% of the total campsite area. iii) A campsite located in a drainage area under Article 15 1 of the Sewerage Act shall introduce sewage from the drainage area into the public sewer when the use of public sewerage is initiated pursuant to Article 27 of the same, except cases falling under Article 28 of the Sewerage Act. iv) It shall minimize the impact on the natural environment and landscape by creating a landscaped green area along the boundary of the campsite. v) It shall avoid damages such as collapse of slopes or soil leakage caused by campsites. Hanok Stay | A Hanok, a traditional Korean residential property, equipped with facilities of accommodation and traditional cultural experiences such as traditional games and crafts, for the use of tourists. However, this is not the case for hanok falling under any of the following. i) Hanok designated and registered as a cultural heritage pursuant to the Cultural Heritage Protection Act. ii) Hanok registered as an excellent architectural asset pursuant to Article 10 of the Act on Value Enhancement of Hanok and Other Architectural Assets. iii) Hanok prescribed by local ordinances of special autonomous cities, cities, counties, and districts such as hanok and old houses in Hanok Village. ③ In the case of providing an accommodation experience, convenience facilities such as bathrooms and shower facilities shall be equipped so that users do not experience inconvenience. ④ 1 or more fire extinguishers shall be installed, and a single alarm type detector and a carbon monoxide alarm (only applicable when heating facilities are installed individually) shall be installed in each room. ⑤ Where cooking facilities are installed, they shall be installed and managed in accordance with the standards prescribed by the Urban Gas Business Act, the Safety Control and Business of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Act, the Act on the Fire Prevention and Installation, Maintenance, and Safety Control of of Firefighting, and other relevant regulations. ⑥ It will be equipped with facilities capable of supplying tap water (referring to water supplied from water supply facilities under Article 3 5 of the Water Supply and Waterworks Installation Act and small-scale water supply facilities under 14 of the same Article) or drinking water quality standards under Article 5 3 of the Drinking Water Management Act. ⑦ It will have a system that can disinfect rooms, reception tables, lobby facilities, corridors, stairs, bathrooms, shower facilities and toilet facilities at least once a month. ⑧ Clean rooms adn bathrooms from time to time, and have conditions for washing bedding regularly. ⑨ It will be equipped with facilities of ventilation. Although the statutory classification system above is the basis for statistical survey by relevant government authorities, it does not necessarily match the classification system used in the market. For example, most popular types such as guesthouse and pension are not defined in the statutory classification system, and therefore, there is no official statistics for them.
